Visible from the Pan American highway, these peaks overlook central Chile's native forests. El Volcan Descabezado trek/climb is a classic 5 – 7 day excursion with waterfalls, classic forests, meadows, pumice fields, and a penitente filled crater.

Itinerary

Day 1

9:00 a.m. Meet in Curico and drive to the Vilches national park office.
Lunch on the trail
Camp at Vega de los Treiles
Side hike
Dinner and star gazing

Day 2

Have lunch at the Rio Claro with a side hike to a nearby waterfall. Continue on to Valle Venado.

Day 3

Ascend to the hot springs camp by way of high mountain lagoons and creeks.
Relax in the hot springs after a great day.

Day 4

Ascend the Volcano Descabezado, Quizapu Crater, or one of many short day hikes.
Return to the hot springs camp to relax one more night.

Day 5

Start back to the Rio Claro Camp, eating lunch in Valle Venado. Camp in the Claro Valley.

Day 6

Back to Vilches Alto through the thick native coigue and oak forests.
